(Major spoiler alerts ahead!) Lila's oldest brother died a few years ago, and the grief apparently drove away her father's work ethic, too. Caleb blames himself for the death of his first wife from postpartum depression after the stillbirth of their son (although we don't learn the details about this until Caleb reveals this to Lila at the crisis point late in the book). Meanwhile, Victor, the wealthiest man in town, who seems to be a combination of Mr. Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life", Ebenezer Scrooge, and the stereotypical "Snidely Whiplash"-type evil landlord, has been courting Lila whether she wants to be or not (she doesn't), and he eventually offers to pay off all of her family's many debts -- IF Lila agrees to marry him. When Caleb sells off his mother's wedding ring to pay off Lila's family's debts himself instead, Victor insists on a duel (giving Caleb a non-functional pistol) -- but then Lila's dad finally rediscovers his courage and saves the day.There were just a few grammatical glitches I noticed (mostly preposition choices my "copy editor geek" brain differed with), but those became less apparent once I got drawn into the plot. I would have liked to have had a better idea of what exactly was holding Lila and Caleb back from revealing their feelings for each other to each other for so long; however, I suppose it did increase the dramatic tension to withhold Caleb's revelation of the past tragedy in his life until the climax of the book. (Now on the other hand, though, what exactly was the cause of the death of Lila's oldest brother? And why does her father apparently blame himself for it? Although the father blaming himself, even unjustifiably, I can somewhat understand, as my husband and I lost a son ourselves several years ago.)I did also like how Lila and Caleb were able to draw comfort, hope and strength not just from their friends and (some) family members, but also from memorized Bible verses (all from the Old Testament in this book, as far as I could tell). An inspirational Western romance which creates a dramatic situation without any mail-order brides or travel outside one small town (at least within the "present day" of the plot). Recommended!
